Beyond From Within Reviews

Origivation Magazine

Philadelphia's Origivation magazine has this to say about Beyond From Within: "The handiwork of Pittsburgh-based Steve Andrews, Beyond from Within is a one-man show of whimsical folk melodies, acid trippin’ psychedelica, and celestial expressions. Lyrically, Andrews is quite poetic – on "Temper My Desire," he sings: "Steps I prize await my journey / A million roads play at my feet / Like water flowing blindly downhill / Chasin’ my ego wherever it leads." Musically, however, he can get a little overzealous – on "Today, Today" and "Seven Strangers," there’s just too much going on. If he cleaned up a little bit of this and a little bit of that, he would have a real gem on his hands. - A.S."

Dream Magazine #9 Review

Steven Andrews Beyond from Within (www.beyondfromwithin.com)  Pittsburgh based singer/songwriter and one-man-band Steven Andrews has created an enjoyably pleasant nine song CD-R debut with this release. Steven favors a spacey layered sound that incorporates elements of folk rock, synth pop, 70’s rock, and mellow psychedelic balladry. Andrews supplies electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, and all vocals.

Progression Magazine Review

BEYOND FROM WITHIN: Beyond from Within
2008 (CD, 30:40); independent release
Style: Psychedelic/folk-rock/pop/symphonic

Sound: Composition: Musicianship:
Performance: Total rating: 11

This solo effort by Pittsburgh troubadour Steve Andrews is a winsome throwback to the folky psychedelic flower-child pop of the late 1960s, with strong nods here and there to the Moody Blues.

Andrews has a good voice and can carry/write a tune, as well as harmonize with himself in the studio. His playing on guitars, bass, keyboards and drums is strong enough to convincingly deliver these nine melodic song-oriented tracks, which brim with chime-y, echo-y pop-psych atmospherics. It’s thin-sounding production — the bane to many a self-produced project — where the sound falters slightly.

But once Andrews gets around to fleshing things out via stronger production resources and perhaps some supporting players, the potential promised here should flourish. The likes of "Seven Strangers" and "Soul Traveler," for instance, show a talented musician with a knack for crafting enticing melodies and complementary symphonic arrangements transcending mere singer-songwriter fare. Andrews’ interest in exploring that path less traveled is a welcome sign, indeed.— John Collinge
